Below are basic eligibility requirements that students must meet in order to be approved to go abroad.
Students are required to be in good academic standing at time of application and prior to departure in order to be permitted to go abroad. At time of application (the semester before students will go abroad), the Office of Education Abroad will evaluate the student's GPA. Basic minimum GPA requirements are as follows:
|GPA Minimum Requirement|
|Fall, Spring or Year-long programs||2.5|
|Spring Break or Summer programs||2.0|
IMPORTANT NOTE: The chart above displays the Office of Education Abroad's basic minimum requirements. However, some programs may have higher GPA requirements. Students will be able to view the program's requirements on the program brochure.
Students are required to be in good disciplinary standing at time of application and prior to departure in order to be permitted to go abroad. Students who are on probation will not be considered at time of application. Similarly, students who are approved to go abroad but are then placed on probation after approval but prior to departure will not be permitted to go abroad.
Students who have prior incidents on their disciplinary record will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
The first time a UNC Charlotte student is eligible to go abroad is the summer after their freshman year or after they have completed two full-time semesters at UNC Charlotte.
Students can study abroad their senior year but are unable to graduate the same semester they study abroad. This is because our office does not receive the host university transcript in time to process the grades for graduation. The only exception to this rule is if students participate in a faculty-led program the same semester they plan to graduate (this is because, for faculty-led programs only, we receive the grades in time to process them for graduation that same semester).
Students can choose to study abroad the semester they were planning on graduating; however, their graduation date will be pushed to the following December or May graduation date. If students are comfortable with their graduation date being pushed, then they can still study abroad the last semester of their senior year.
Transfer students have to have a UNC Charlotte GPA established at time of application in order to go abroad the subsequent semester.
