Faculty-Led Summer & Semester Credit Process

The following information is in regards to faculty-led summer and faculty-led semester programs only:

Phase 1: Research Process

Luckily, each faculty-led program lists the exact UNC Charlotte course credit you will receive if participating in that particular program. This information will be listed under the "academics" tab of the online program brochure per program. It's recommended that students complete the following steps:

  • Meet with your Academic Advisor(s) to determine what UNC Charlotte courses you need to take to complete graduation requirements
  • Search for a faculty-led program that offers this exact course(s)
  • Proceed to the application process if ready

Phase 2: Application Process

Depending on whether or not the faculty-led program offers several course choices, you may need to complete a course selection form indicating which courses you would like to take while abroad. This will likely be a part of the application process or come once you are approved.

Phase 3: While Abroad

The Office of Education Abroad will enroll you in an FRST study abroad placeholder course while you are abroad. This will keep you listed as an active student at UNC Charlotte, allowing you to receive financial aid or scholarship funds (if applicable and if registered for full-time status).

Although you may be in the middle of your study abroad program, you'll still need to think about the courses you need to register for at UNC Charlotte the semester you return to campus. You will receive an email both from your academic department(s) and from the Office of Education Abroad reminding you to enroll in courses the subsequent semester. You'll enroll in courses the same way you normally do online through your my.uncc.edu account.

Phase 4: Returning from Abroad

It can take anywhere from 2 - 5 weeks for your Faculty Director to send the A - F letter grade you earned per course you took to the Office of Education Abroad. Our office does not evaluate coursework nor assign A - F letter grades. Any discrepancies with your grade should be communicated to your Faculty-Director. The Office of Education Abroad will then send the grade report to the Office of the Registrar. It then takes 3 - 5 business days for the UNC Charlotte equivalent courses and corresponding letter grades to appear on your UNC Charlotte transcript, which will replace the FRST study abroad placeholder course.
