About the Gilman scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to national security and economic prosperity. While not required, all UNC Charlotte students are encouraged to attend one of the Gilman Scholarship Workshops facilitated by the Office of Education Abroad. During the workshop (each is identical, although one is a live online webinar and one is in-person), OEA staff will cover the Gilman application requirements and tips on how to have a competitive application.
About the Essay Review
In addition to facilitating the Gilman Scholarship Workshops, the Office of Education Abroad also offers a Gilman Scholarship Essay Review. Students who sign up for the essay review must be:
- Applying for the Cycle 2 Gilman Scholarship for students intending to study abroad Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Academic Year 2020-21 or Spring 2021 that is due March 3rd, 2020
- Eligible to apply for the Gilman scholarship
- An active UNC Charlotte student who has completed Study Abroad 101
Once a student signs up for an essay review time slot, they will then be required to submit a copy of their scholarship essay(s) by Tuesday, February 18th in order to get OEA staff enough time to review and consider feedback. Then, during the student's time slot on the day of the essay review, OEA staff will provide feedback and give tips to the students in order for them to improve their essay(s).
How to Sign Up
Students who are interested in signing up for an essay review time slot must sign up for a specific time. After signing up, students will be required to upload a copy of their essay(s) in advance. Walk ins will not be seen.
